Begin your tour with a visit The Temple of Seti I (also known as the Great Temple of Abydos.
Abydos is one of the oldest and most important sites of ancient Egypt 3300 BCE.
Located on the west bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt, the sacred city overlooks a desert valley once thought to offer passage to the realm of the dead. It was the royal burial ground for Egypt’s first pharaohs and later served as the center of worship for the cult of Osiris, god of the underworld.
With its valuable inscriptions and numerous funerary monuments, Abydos has perhaps contributed more than any other site in Egypt to our present understanding of the history of state formation, linguistic development, and architecture in Ancient Egypt.
Continue to Dendera Temple to see one of the best preserved temples in Egypt, see the last temple built in Greco-Roman times.
Marvel at decorations from Roman rulers alongside Egyptian gods at a temple dedicated to Hathor, the goddess of love, joy, happiness, and music. See a beautiful sculpture of Queen Cleopatra VII.
Hathor was among the most important and popular deities in ancient Egypt. She was associated with music, joy, dance and motherhood; she was also known as the lady of the sky. Her main cult center was at Dendera where one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt stands today.
The entrance of the temple, with six massive columns surmounted with the head of Hathor, is considered among the most beautiful monuments in Egypt. Sistrums (a musical instrument) closely associated with the goddess, frame her head.
The temple of Dendera dates back to the Ptolemaic Period, although evidence points to older structures once existing on the site, dating as far back as king Pepy I, from the Old Kingdom. Among the temple’s most notable features are astronomical engravings on its ceiling.
Tourism and encroachment at one of Ancient Egypt’s most important sites require technical expertise and careful planning to support sustainable preservation.
With our an Egyptologist guide: find out why this was once considered one of the holiest places on earth, explore the cult Osiris and learn more about the gateway to the underworld at the Seti Temple and explore the Dendera Temple (Hathor Temple ), the goddess of love, joy, happiness, and music.
